Kindar McNamee and Babette Roy Are This Year’s Canadian Boulder National Champions

Impressively, Roy flashed all four problems in the women's final

The 2024 Canadian Boulder National Championships were held on Thursday and Friday at the Bloc Shop Chabanel in Montreal, Quebec. British Columbia’s Kindar McNamee and Quebec’s Babette Roy won gold, with both athletes being the only competitors in their respective gender categories to top all four of the problems in the finals.

McNamee was joined on the podium by TJ Foley and Lucas Uchida. Both climbers topped three of the four problems, but Foley took less attempts than Uchida, earning him the silver. In women’s, Sienna Chow earned silver with three tops and Molly Dreher took bronze with two tops.

McNamee, 21, is one of Canada’s top competitive climbers. He has lots of experience in IFSC competition, participating in World Cups in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2024. He placed second at the Canadian Boulder National Championships in 2022 and fourth in 2023. He won gold at last year’s Canadian lead National Championships. Before Friday’s event, McNamee was ranked 7th nationally in Boulder.

Roy, 22, has been at performing at the top of the Canadian comp climbing scene for years. In 2022, she won the Boulder National Championships. She didn’t compete in the 2023 event. Like McNamee, she has plenty of IFSC World Cup experience, competing in comps in 2018, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Before Friday’s event, Roy was ranked 3rd nationally in Boulder.

The Canadian Boulder National Championships are run by Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC), the national governing body for competition climbing in Canada, as recognized by the Canadian Olympic Committee and International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC). The results of the Boulder and Lead events contribute to national athlete rankings, which ultimately determine who gets invited to be in the national High Performance Program (HPP) and represent Canada in IFSC World Cup and Olympic competition.

Many big names in Canadian comp climbing did not participate at this year’s Boulder National Championships because they were instead competing at the Pan American Championships in Santiago, Chile. These include Oscar Baudrand, Matthew Rodriguez, Ian Tan, Zach Richardson, Dylan Smith, Jacqueline Ho, Anna Kelley, Evangelina Briggs, Emilia Callanan, and Cedar Pidgeon.
