New Brunswick Church to Become Gym: Climb 1884

And a new app with every rock climb in the province updated

A 137-year-old church in Saint John, N.B., is going to be turned into a climbing gym. David and Mary-Gwen Alston bought the Church of St. John the Baptist and are converting it to become Climb 1884. They will be keeping as much of the stained-glass windows and Gothic trim as they can in place.

They’ll install a new roof, modern heating, new amenities and will update the building as much as possible. It will surely become one of the unique climbing gyms in Canada, with old architecture and an ornate interior.

In 2018, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint John closed nine churches in Saint John. The owners said they didn’t want to see the old church get torn down and replaced with a new building.  The Alstons already own Timber Top Adventures in Saint John, and said Climb 1884 will be open early 2022. Follow along on Instagram below.

New climbing app for New Brunswick climbers

Top east coast climber Peter Adamson has released a climbing app for New Brunswick climbers to access for free. Adamson said, “This app serves as a digital guidebook for the province of New Brunswick. It is completely up-to-date in terms of routes, and more and more pictures are being added regularly (whenever I can get out to take them).”

For more information, check out the app here and follow Adamson on Instagram below for more east coast climbing.
