Quebec Provincial Bouldering Champs: Wyett and Lemay

Provincial Championships were held yesterday at Campus Escalade in Trois-Rivières, QC. Lots of crushers hail from Quebec so it was bound to be a stacked event.

Noticeably missing from the running order was Sébastien Lazure, who is recovering from two finger injuries. Even without Lazure, team Bloc Shop dominated the event, taking five of the six podium spots for the open category.

For the women, Olivia Wyett took home the gold. She stated in an interview that the final problems were quite complicated, requiring a lot of thought and while she thinks she’s better at flashing problems than sending hard ones in finals, she attributes her success to being really mentally prepared for the competition. Véronique Gosselin, with the only send of women’s four, earned herself the silver and Audrey Larochelle came third.

Pier-Michaël Lemay impressed everyone, including himself, with his performance in finals. He flashed the first three problems and also topped the tough problem four.

Lemay said he went into the comp, and especially into finals, with no expectations – just to have fun – and couldn’t believe how well he climbed. In particular, he said he was pleasantly surprised that his tech-y, tall-man beta on the fourth problem worked out. Nathan Smith and David Trudeau finished second and third, respectively.
