Sean McColl has qualified to represent Canada at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after he finished 10th at the combined world championships. While only the top seven athletes make it to the Olympics, there is a maximum of two per nation. In addition, as the host country, Japan has a guaranteed, discretionary spot, which means only one Japanese climber is selected for the Olympics at this event. Because four of the eight finalists are Japanese, climbers who finish in eighth, ninth and tenth get a ticket to Tokyo. This is great news for Sean McColl, as well as Ludovico Fossali, who finished 9th.
Alex Megos finished first overall, with Jakob Schubert and Tomoa Narasaki behind. Adam Ondra finished out of the Olympic group because he accidentally stepped on a bolt. This was only qualifications for the final combined event. Stay tuned for more.
