11 Climbers Killed in Ring of Fire Eruption

Mount Merapi sent plumes of ash into the air as several people were climbing up

Eleven climbers have been killed in an eruption of Mount Merapi in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The volcano is one of many in the Pacific Ring of Fire. Few details are known about where the climbers were or their identities.

“The column of ash was observed in grey colour with thick intensity leaning toward the east,” said Hendra Gunawan, head of Indonesia’s Centre of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation.

Marapi stand at 2,891 metres tall and is one of the more active volcanoes in the area. It has several popular trails and routes. In addition to the 11 climbers who were killed, three climbers were found alive, but a further 12 are missing.

All climbing routes and trails in the area have also been closed.
