A Sendy Magic Wood Trip for Mejdi Schalck
Known for his comp climbing skills, the young French climber threw down a bunch of V14s and V13s during a short trip
Twenty-year-old French climber Mejdi Schalck just returned home from a bouldering trip to Magic Wood, Switzerland. When most people think of Schalck, they think of modern comp climbing. Mejdi is one of the brightest stars in the sport and one of the best at new-age comp climbing movement. On the World Cup circuit, he often makes quick work of wild paddle dynos, pendulum swings, and coordinated double clutches.
Schalck’s skills on plastic translates to rock. On his recent Magic Wood trip, Schalck sent an impressive two V14s (Power of Now and The Never Ending Story), four V13s, and many V12s and V11s. The Never Ending Story V14 is a popular Chris Sharma line that many of the world’s top boulderers have climbed over the years.
Power of Now V14 is a five-star problem that was established Giuliano Cameroni in 2020 and originally graded V15. “Happy to tick this iconic line from Magic Wood after falling many times at the last [move]!” said Schalck about his send on Instagram. “I thought I was going to fall when sticking the top edge with my fingertips, had to improvise something to stay on.” You can watch Schalck climb Power of Now in a video below.
Although many thought he was a shoo-in for the Paris Olympics, Schalck narrowly missed out on a spot to compete in the Summer Games. In 2023, he won golds at the Boulder World Cups in Hachioji and Seoul. He also won silver at the Boulder World Championships in Bern and bronze at the Boulder World Cup in Prague. On the Boulder World Cup circuit in 2022, he placed first in Salt Lake City and third in Meiringen.
