Alex Honnold Free-Solos “Silly” New Route

The area of Nevada has some great rock climbing weather for the next two months

Alex Honnold started 2023 by climbing a route in Nevada that he free-soloed before joining his family to watch a presentation by David Blane the magician.

The meandering route follows a line of weakness up a rib feature on El Padre near Las Vegas. When the rock got bad, he traversed to easier terrain. He said, “So my ‘route’ wound being a bit silly since it’s not very straight.”

Honnold said that he was planning on heading up to La Madre, the highest mountain in Red Rock canyon, in the La Madre Range – a collection of limestone peaks that have good rock climbing conditions until late spring. There is little information about the technical climbing on El Padre.

Last fall, Honnold has established a roughly 60-kilometre traverse that included 14 Red Rock multi-pitch routes up to 5.11, hiking and scrambling for well over 7,000 metres of vertical in a 32-hour push. He called the traverse Honnold’s Ultimate Red Rock Traverse or HURT.
