Another Death on this Popular Mountain

Steep couloirs on Aiguille Vert have claimed the lives of at least four climbers in the past month

A fourth climber has died on the popular Alps peak Aiguille Verte (4,122 m) in just the past month. On Wednesday, Maxime Manhes, who’s in his early 20s, fell 600 metres down the Cordier Couloir to his death.

He was about to ski the line with Alois Hebbette, who called search and rescue after Manhes fell. No other details are given about the accident, except that Manhes was deceased by the time help arrived. Manhes has skied a number of committing big lines this season, some of which you can see on his Instagram here.

Cordier Couloir is graded 5.5 E4 and was first skied in the late 1970s by Yves Detry. It’s been repeated a few times over the decades but is considered very technical.

One month ago, another skier fell to his death while attempting the Couturier Couloir, also on Aiguille Verte. And just last week, two climbers fell to their death while on the Whymper Couloir on Aiguille Verte – read about that accident here.
