Avid Ice Climber Dies in Montana’s Hyalite

The Gallatin County Sheriff Search and Rescue has shared information about the accident, including who was involved

An ice climber has died after a fall while climbing in Hyalite Canyon, Montana. The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Office said they were called on Saturday afternoon by a GPS device monitoring service.

Deputies said an alert was activated at around the same time an eyewitness called 911 to say that an ice climber had fallen and was hurt. The person was identified by the Sheriff’s office as 36-year-old Kyle Rott, who was described as an avid ice climber. First responders said they transported Rott to a Bozeman hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

“Sheriff Dan Springer would like to express his condolences to Mr. Kyle Rott’s family in South Dakota and his friends,” the office posted on its Facebook page. “Sheriff Springer also thanks all the dedicated search and rescue members who responded so quickly.”

This is the sadly the second time that we’re reporting about an ice climber dying this month, with the other being in the Canadian Rockies, read more here. Our condolences go to Rott’s family and friends. Read more about the accident on the office’s Instagram page below.
