Banff’s Mountain Book Competition 2022 Shortlist

The awards will be announced on Nov. 3 at the Banff Centre Mountain Film and Book Festival

The Banff Centre’s Mountain Film and Book Festival will be taking place in Banff at the end of October. There will be dozens of films, speakers and an annual book award.

Climbing book enthusiasts will find a lot of interest here, with Lauren De Launay Miller’s largely previously untold history of women’s climbing in Yosemite, Katie Ives’s very literary tour of imaginary peaks and their role in climbing, a beautiful book on Scottish climber and rescue pioneer, Hamish MacInnes, guidebooks to Alberta Bouldering and climbing in the Cascades and many other titles.

Over $20,000 in cash is awarded annually with 8 awards selected by an international jury of writers, adventurers and editors. The short list of category award winners eligible for the Grand Prize is announced in October every year. In 2022, the Grand Prize will be announced on Thursday, November 3 at the Festival and category awards will be presented to winning authors.

Of the many categories, the following three are the most focused on climbing. To find out what role the award plays in mountain literature, read Jon Popowich’s story here.
