Ben Harnden Sends Deadlift V14 in Squamish

He adds another hard boulder problem to his one-of-a-kind Squamish tick list

Squamish local Ben Harnden has repeated Deadlift V14 in Squamish. Located on the southwest corner of the giant Octagon boulder in the Grand Wall boulders, the steep problem is powerful and exhausting, with a very high slab exit. Tim Doyle made the first ascent of the long-time open project in 2020. The problem saw a string of repeats last season, including from Canadians Lucas Uchida and Ethan Salvo.

“Super amped to finish Deadlift,” said Harnden via Instagram, “Great spring project. Really nice to climb with a strong crew and fun hang outs! V14?” The problem gets a V13 grade in the guidebook but recent ascensionists have suggested V14.

Harnden is one of Canada’s most accomplished and well-rounded climbers with repeats of Dreamcatcher 5.14d, Cobra Crack 5.14b, and The Bull 5.14a R. In 2017, he completed the Squamish Trifecta: a 5.14 sport route, a 5.14 trad route, and a V14 boulder problem. In 2021, he made the first ascent of the sport route Dark Matter 5.14d/15a in Squamish. Last year, he put up Bladerunner 5.14b/c, a gear route up the Kashmir wall on the Chief. You can watch Harnden on a previous V14 send of North-North Ridge below.
