Bozeman Ice World Cup Wall Damaged by Wind Storm

Word is spreading that the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup that was to be held in December in Bozeman, Montana, might be cancelled.

Over the past few days, a number of storms have moved through the Canadian and American Rockies, bringing with them snow and wind. In Canada, from Calgary to Revelstoke, there are reports that up to a metre of snow fell in parts.

In Montana, “hurricane force winds” hit a number of areas, including Bozeman, which has been home to the UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup since 2013. The event is part of the Bozeman Ice Climbing Festival, which will be going into its 19th year.

The World Cup structure in Bozeman, which was made out of scaffolding and plywood, was severely damaged during the wind storm. The high cost to repair the wall might mean the event will be cancelled. Event organizers are discussing options tomorrow and we will update the story as more details become available.

If you’re one of the dozens of athletes planning on travelling to Bozeman for the World Cup, be prepared to change your plans. To see the wall before it blew down, visit the event’s Facebook page here.
