Brazil Gets its First 5.15a with Auto Retrato
Felipe Camargo continues his send train with the first ascent of the hardest sport climb in the country
Felipe Camargo has made the first ascent of Auto Retrato in Serra do Cipó, it’s the first proposed 5.15a in Brazil. There are other 5.15a sport climbs in South America, including Le Vent Nous Portera at Socaire, Chile.
Felipe Camargo began climbing at 10 years old in a gym in Ribeirão Preto, a Brazilian city a few hours from São Paulo. He quickly became Brazil’s best sport climbing and the first from the country to climb 5.15b with El Bon Combat in 2019. Last month, he made the first ascent of Gran Reserva 5.14d, a 10 year project – Auto Retrato is the direct start to it.
The conditions at Serra do Cipó have been hot and muggy, which is why Camargo was starting his sessions at sunrise. “Real privilege to find such a gem of a hard route at Cipó,” he said.
Some of his other impressive sends include Gancho Perfecto 5.15a, Logan 5.14d FA, Papichulo 5.15a, Fortaleza V15 FA, Catalan Witness the Fitness V15 FA and The Never Ending Story V14.
