Canadian Climbers Celebrate The Tragically Hip

The Tragically Hip are arguably Canada’s top rock band and they are currently on a west to east tour of the country. Lead singer Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer and this will be the band’s last trip. That has not stopped them from giving amazing performances everywhere they go. There are teleprompters to remind the front man of important verses between the choruses, but the energy has not wavered.

Downie’s sporadic dance moves have slowed and the band stands close by, but never before have audiences been so energized. This cross-country tour is important as it celebrates songs long loved by Canadian climbers, from Wheat Kings to Ahead by a Century. Downie is the alpinist of musicians in that despite nothing but dyer news he moves upward and forward with a smile and stylish moves. We can all learn something from Gordo. Many top Canadian climbers have celebrated the Hip this summer, from Sonnie Trotter to Jen Olson. Where will you be when the Hip’s final show broadcasts live on CBC on Aug. 20?
