Canadian Dies in Avalanche on Ecuador Volcano

The accident took place high on Chimborazo, one of the country's most popular mountains

A Canadian woman has died following an avalanche on a popular Ecuador volcano called Chimborazo. Rebecca Dinelle, 25, of Quebec was caught in the snow slide at around 5,000 metres and tragically didn’t survive.

Fellow Canadian Eloii Larrivee, 24, who was also involved in the avalanche, phoned it in to authorities. The National Risk and Emergency Services agency said on Twitter that the avalanche hit “for unknown reasons” early Thursday as several climbers were on the 6,293-metre mountain.

Chimborazo is a popular peak for domestic and international mountaineers. Last October an avalanche buried 16 Ecuadorans who were climbing to the summit Five died and one remains missing.
