The Canadian Nationals Lead Difficulty and Speed Championships qualifying round took place at The Boulders in Saanich, B.C. on May 16.

In the Men’s Open, Sean McColl, three-time IFSC overall world champion placed third overall with B.C. climber Elan Jonas McRae coming in second and American Kai Lightner finishing in second. For the Women’s Open, Becca Frangos took first led for Canadians, but finished in third overall behind Americans Delaney Miller andMelina Constanza. Becca also finished first in her Junior category. The always strong Alison Stewart-Patterson finished in fourth in Open, followed by Pia Graham of Ontario.

“It was an interesting competition style because they were running both qualifying climbs simultaneously,” said Sara Frangos, who sits in third in Junior. “So depending on your running order you could be climbing the second route first and the first route second and vice versa.

“They usually use this style for highly attended world cups, but they decided to use it for Nationals.”
