Canadian Stu Smith Sends New 5.12R in Utah

Squamish-based Stu Smith has established a number of R-rated routes over the past few seasons. On Boxing Day, he climbed a new 5.12+R in Black Rocks Canyon near St. George, Utah. Watch Smith on his new hard route below.

After his send, he wrote, “I was surprised to see it [a project in Black Rocks] was not bolted as many of the other climbs in the area which could be trad climbs have been bolted. A beautiful overhanging arête with what looked like potential for gear near the start and half way up. I rapped in and cleaned out the cracks and figured the gear and it went.

“I called it Do or Debt 5.12+ R. It has incredibly finicky small gear, some bouldery moves and suspect rock near the end in the run-out. Nicole Deuchar deserves some endless thanks and gelato for willing to be attached to the other side of that rope you are the best.”

Smith is featured in the short film below, which was filmed in Squamish.
