Climber Dies on Wind Tower in Eldorado Canyon

It's unknown what happened, and the identity of the man has not been released

A rock climber died and their partner was seriously injured after a fall in Eldorado Canyon yesterday. The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office made a statement about the accident. Rescuers were called to the Wind Tower in the park at around 6 p.m. after the two men fell around 50 metres, authorities said. It’s unknown what route they were on.

Bystanders had a rope ready for rescuers and helped them get to the injured climbers. One of the climbers who fell, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. The second climber, a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and was flown by a MedEvac helicopter to a trauma centre in Denver. As of Friday morning, his condition was not known.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office and investigators from the Boulder County Coroner’s Office were called to the area. “The death investigation is ongoing,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release. The identity of the man who died has not been released.

The circumstances of the accident aren’t known, but it’s a reminder to double-check your systems, take your time and be careful. Complacency and rushing are two common reasons accidents happen late in the rock season.
