Climber’s First-Ever Trad Route Was Just 5.14c

At only 20 years old, Andreas Hofherr just climbed a 5.14c trad route and it was his first time placing a cam

Austrian climber Andreas Hofherr has repeated Bernd Zangerl’s difficult trad route Into the Sun 5.14c in Murgtal, Switzerland. Zangerl opened the route in 2017 and it’s only been repeated by Jacopo Larcher.

Hofherr, a 20-year-old who’s known for his competition climbing skills, sent Into the Sun as his first-ever trad route. “I then placed the first cam, which was not only the first cam on the route but also my first trad experience ever,” he told Planet Mountain. “Despite my lack of trad milage, I climbed the final meters fairly calmly.”

At 17 metres high and 20 metres long, Into the Sun has two V12 boulder cruxes that lead to a large sloper and an often damp crack. Once at the crack, a few cams can be placed nine metres off the deck before continuing to the top.
