Climbers Who Died Deep Water Soloing Identified
The area where they died is known for having shallow water
Earlier this month, two climbers from the U.S.A. died while deep water soloing (DWS) in Mallorca, Spain, near Cala Sa Nau, close to the eastern coast town of Portocolom.
The pair, named as Mark Anthony Bacolod Stiles, 35, and Brandon Scott Burns, 25, both of Baltimore, Maryland, were killed after taking falls from steep DWS routes. One of the climbers were spotted unconscious, floating in the water. A lifeguard attempted to resuscitate the man shortly before the other climber was discovered deceased.
Spanish climber Enoko Pou said that climbing above 20 metres is dangerous at that crag because of the shallow water.
In 2012, a British climber drowned in Mallorca after falling into the sea carrying gear, including a rope. Another British climber drowned in 2004 while deep water soloing in rough waves. Our condolences to the families and friends of Bacolod Stiles and Scott Burns.
