A select group of foreign and UK-based climbers arrived at Buckingham Palace over the weekend to meet the Queen and mark the 100-year anniversary of Captain Scott’s tragic 1911-12 polar expedition.

Climbers attending the event included Dave MacLeod, Leo Houlding and Reinhold Messner.

Captain Robert Falcon Scott led am ill-fated expedition to the South Pole in 1912. Scott and his team reached the Pole on January 17, 1912, only to find Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen had arrived there 33 days earlier. Unfortunately, Scott’s entire team died on the return trip from the pole.
