Drew Ruana Sends First V16 with Sleepwalker

The top boulderer has climbed a number of other hard problems in the past year

Drew Ruana has sent his first V16 with Sleepwalker in Red Rocks, a hard problem first climbed by Jimmy Webb last year. Sleepwalker climbs a 55-degree overhang and has a number of burly moves. In the fall, Ruana made the first ascent of Squoze V15.

“I just dialed all the moves perfectly before considering redpoint attempts,” said Ruana on 8a.nu. “I did it on my fourth redpoint attempt today, but I made sure over the last seven days before that I could do all the sections perfectly each session. I was going for ‘low points’ and yesterday did it from from the second move to the top which gave me confidence.”

With one spot left for a climber from U.S.A. to make the Olympics, Ruana is a favourite. He said he’s not going to compete at the Continental Championship where one climber can win a spot at the Olympics. After that event, there will still be a chance to make the Olympics with the Tripartite ticket.
