Elisabeth Revol to Attempt Manaslu in Winter and Alone

French climber Elisabeth Revol is currently on her way to attempt a bold ascent. She will be attempting to climb the 8,156-metre Manaslu without a partner or bottled oxygen and in the calendar winter season. She arrived in Nepal in early December to acclimatize in the Khumbu area.

Her alpine-style ascent, if successful, would be the first of the mountain in winter. The Himalayan Times reported Revol will be accompanied by Giambiasi Ludovic Jean at basecamp, but she will be heading up alone.

Revol attempted Nanga Parbat three times in winter and reached about 7,500 metres. Revol climbed Broad Peak, Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II in the summer of 2008. “Perhaps the great moments of loneliness, but it is an adventure that I already know, will be exceptionally good in all aspects,” she said before this trip. The only team to summit Manaslu in winter was Maciej Berbeka and Ryszard Gajewski in 1984, but they departed in fall. Watch Revol on Nanga Parbat with Tomek Mackiewicz on their Nanga Light expedition in early 2016.
