First Climbers Reach Everest and Lhotse Summits in 2019

At least eight climbers have reached the summit of Everest from the south, including team lead Siddhi Bahadur Tamang and Nepali climbers Pasdawa Sherpa, Dawa Nurbu Sherpa, Ang Phurba Sherpa, Dorji Gyaljen Sherpa, Ming Dorchi Sherpa, Pasang Dawa Sherpa and Sangbu Bhote.

The strong Sherpas team completed fixing ropes last night, as more climbers started up from base camp. Another group of climbers is expected to reach the summit today.

On Lhotse, the fourth highest peak in the world at 8,516 metres, seven Sherpas and five clients reached the summit. Among the group are two firsts: Christina Flampouri is the first Greek woman and Sirbaz Khan is the first Pakistan climbers.

On the north side of the mountain, Cory Richards and Topo Mena are using the guiding company Alpenglow for their logistics as they work on their new route.

From Richards: “New Route Report Update: Topo and I have departed from ABC and have arrived at the North Col. Our plan is to be up here for the next two days, touch 8,000m (26,000ft), sleep high, and get this last rotation of acclimatization in the bag.”

The Himalayan climbing season has started, updates to come.
