First Woman from Slovakia Climbs Everest

Lucia Janicova said, "I don’t need to get a record for just myself, I want to get a record and share it with girls and women worldwide”

Mountaineer Lucia Janicova has become the first woman from Slovakia to climb Mount Everest after reaching the summit on Sunday. Her and her team of 15 other climbers, including American climate scientist Lester Perry, have safely returned to base camp.

The first woman to ever climb Everest was Japanese climber Junko Tabei, who climbed it in 1975. Tabei was only the 36th person to climb Everest and she went on to become the first woman to climb the highest mountain on every continent.

Janicova, who said, “When I found out that no Slovak woman had ever climbed Mount Everest, I saw it as a reflection of the deeply rooted gender inequality in our society and I decided to break this barrier,” has also climbed Aconcagua, Mera Peak and Mont Blanc.

Janicova is currently running a fundraiser to support single-parent families in Slovakia, which you can learn more about here.
