New Routing on Revelstoke’s Grand Wall

The 360m High Wall Near Revelstoke is Multi-Pitch Granite Climbing at its Finest with Locals Developing New Routes Ground Up

Ruedi Beglinger is the founder of Selkirk Mountain Experience in Revelstoke, BC, and one of the leading route developers of the area. Over the last few seasons Beglinger and partners have been hard at work developing the Victor Lake Wall.

The Victor Lake Wall is 360m high and steep. It is directly above Victor Lake, 14.4 km west of Revelstoke. “It feels like you are climbing in Squamish. Starting out in the deep forest, climbing some lower angle pitches at the base and shortly after finding yourself in the steep main part of the wall, vertical to overhanging, exposed and endless fun, as you climb the most amazing rock” says Beglinger.

The wall has a long history. For years climbers looked at the wall and planned to head up to check it out but no trips took place. Then Dean Flick started to clean and bolt a route, The Mission, completed in 2007. “Today, the Victor Lake Wall reached a class in its own, with several incredible multi-pitch routes this wall belongs to the best multi-pitch crags in Canada” says Beglinger.

This season Ruedi has been hard at work developing a new line, Mystery. “Yes, I have been building a new route. Mystery on the Victor Lake Wall. In the Victor Lake Wall as project. It is not finish yet. I have lead-bolted the route to the top in one hard day, but now I have to go back and clean it from the many lose rocks (smaller and larger sizes), clean hand holds and foot holds and give the route a good scrub ….. turn it into an absolute stellar route. I am heading to the Durrand Glacier Chalet for the summer, Mystery will be completed in mid-September. More likely this eight pitch route plus four pitches at the lower wall (total 12 pitches) will be in the upper 5.12 range or even in lower 5.13 ……. we will find out in mid-September.”
