History Made on Yosemite’s El Capitan

Freerider, Salathe and The Nose all had noteworthy ascents over the past few weeks

There has been a lot of action in Yosemite Valley this spring with several free ascents of El Capitan going down, including one historical send.

Will Moss, 20, has become the first climber to flash El Capitan in less than 24 hours by having a no-fall ascent of the 30-pitch Freerider 5.13. In 2024, Babsi Zangerl flashed Freerider over four days as the first person to flash an El Cap route. We interviewed Moss last year about some of his hard trad sends – read it here.

Jordan Cannon made an all-free ascent of Salathe Wall using pitch 19 – the 5.13c crux of the climb that many climbers use a variation to go around. Cannon was support by Mark Hudon. Both climbers are among Yosemite’s most accomplished big wall climbers.

And Yosemite aid master Oliver Tippett has completed a rope-solo ascent of The Nose in only 21 hours. He used a 100-metre rope for his NIAD solo push. See below for more from the climbers.
