How to Place a Metolius Spring Force Bolt
As we head into spring, it's a good time to touch base with your local access group to find out if you can volunteer to help replace aging bolts

Doug Phillips, the founder of Metolius, shows the proper technique for installing a Spring Force Bolt hanger. The hanger has a conical shape that exerts a constant spring force to keep bolts from coming loose.
The bolts are made from 316 stainless steel for greater corrosion resistance. The bolt hole fits 1/2” or 12 mm bolts and it’s rated to 25 kN. It’s not for use in high corrosion marine environments.
Route development, placing bolts and replacing old hardware should be left to access groups and local climbers with experience in the area. Reach out to your local climbing access group to learn how you could possibly help in 2025.
