Jan 17, 2012 – Canadian Tragedy in Patagonia – UPDATED

Reports are emerging that Canadian climber Carlyle Norman was killed while attempting a new line with Cian Brinker on the spire of Bifida in the Torre Massif in Patagonia.

Reports are emerging that Canadian climber Carlyle Norman was killed while attempting a new line with Cian Brinker on the spire of Bifida in the Torre Massif in Patagonia. The pair were rappelling down and were about two pitches from the summit when Norman was hit by rock and killed instantly. Brinker continued to the base and was found suffering from shock. Norman’s body has not been recovered. More details on this tragedy as they emerge.

UPDATE: While initial reports suggested that Norman and Brinker were on Bifida,  it now appears that they were actually climbing on Aguja St Exupery. It is still not clear what route they were attempting.  More news as it becomes available.
