Joe Skopec sent one of Ontario’s hardest new routes this summer after topping his multi-year project that he called A Home Away from Home 5.14+.

Skopec recently moved to Ottawa and, despite the winter weather, has put in many days of developing new routes.

At a crag called Castle Black, Skopec and fellow climber Zach Treanor have established a number of routes up to 5.14, but they’ll have to wait until spring to send due to cold weather.

Skopec and Treanor have bolted two dozen lines and expect to have nearly 40 completed by early next year. They bolted and sent a fun 5.10d.

The exact location won’t be announced until access has been guaranteed, but it’s about a one-hour drive from Ottawa.

“Another 13 hours of developing at Castle Black today with Treaner,” said Skopec on social media. “Four new routes- 80 feet of 5.13ish, 60+ feet of 5.13+ and 2 5.12+’s going at 45 feet!.Always a good time developing!”
