Jonathan Siegrist Sends The Ritual 5.14d in Ten Sleep

It's the American climber's sixth route 5.14d and above this year

On July 26, Jonathan Siegrist made the second ascent of The Ritual 5.14d (9a) at The Temple crag in the Big Horns, high in Ten Sleep Canyon, Wyoming. The route was established by local crusher BJ Tilden in August 2023. Sharing the start with Pneuma 5.14d, another of Tilden’s first ascents, The Ritual breaks up and right through a steep wall of crimps, pockets, and underclings. You can watch Tilden’s FA in a Mellow video below.

“Made it back to Wyoming!” said Siegrist about his ascent of The Ritual on Instagram. “For years this state was like my second home…it’s been way too long since I spent a chunk of time up here so I carved out four weeks this summer. The Big Horns was on the very top of my list as BJ Tilden and others have opened some awesome hard routes since I was last here. [On July 26] I climbed the second ascent of The Ritual 5.14d, a brilliant powerful/pumpy route up the gut of this unusual (sick) wall at The Temple.”

Siegrist, 38, is one of the world’s best sport climbers. According to his 8a.nu page, he has sent six 5.15b’s, 24 5.15a’s, and 49 5.14d’s. The Ritual is his second 5.14d this month, his first being a first ascent of Crise de Panique in Switzerland. In February this year, he repeated Don’t Die in Linares 5.14d and Me I Eat Dust 5.15a, both in Texas. In May, he made the first ascent of Anemology 5.15b at Utah’s Sunset Alley. Last month, he made the second ascent of Cameron Hörst’s Martial Law 5.15a at Robber’s Roost on Mount Charleston, just outside of Las Vegas.

Tilden, 43, is a prolific first ascensionist of hard routes in the U.S.A. He’s opened dozens of 5.14s in his home state of Wyoming. In June 2022, he made the first ascent of Hard Twisted 5.15a in Wolf Point, his hardest route to date. He has nine 5.14d routes to his name, eight of them being Wyoming first ascents, as well as over 20 5.14c FAs in the state.
