Jorge Diaz-Rullo Sends Firt Round, First Minute 5.15b

The steep Spain route was first climbed a decade ago by Chris Sharma

Jorge Diaz-Rullo, 22, has climbed First Round, First Minute 5.15b at Margalef in Spain, which was first climbed by Chris Sharma in 2011. Diaz-Rullo is one of Spain’s top young climbers.

First Round First Minute is his fourth 5.15b after sending Planta de Shiva, Ali Hulk Extensión Total Sit Start at Rodellar and El Bon Combat at Cova de Ocell in September 2020.

When asked about grade progression, he said, “This is what I think. Each time it is more difficult to move forward, and the advances in each grade are different. I think that the jump from 9b to 9b+ is something really difficult and only a few climbers can do it. It is something almost impossible.

“The real point is that I can’t even imagine it at the moment, but I think that one day it will arrive. I think it is quite far in the future, but I could be motivated to do such a difficult route. I would have to train a lot to get stronger and then calm down and quickly climb 9b and 9a+ again. The motivation inside is the real engine and If I decide to try it, I will go until I reach my limit.”

Earlier in March, he ticked First Ley 5.15a, which shares the same start as First Round, First Minute. He spent nine days working on the famous 5.15, which has been repeated by Adam Ondra in 2014 for the second ascent, Alex Megos in 2016 and Stefano Ghisolfi in 2017.
