Kami Rita Sherpa Climbs Everest for Record 29th Time

He climbed the world's highest mountain twice in 2023, so we might see the record broken again this season

For those who pay attention to Himalayan climbing, Nepalese guide Kami Rita Sherpa, who’s now 54, needs little introduction. Kami Rita has now climbed Everest a record 29 times.

“At least 20 climbers from Seven Summit Treks including Kami made a successful ascent of Everest Sunday morning,” Seven Summit Treks said in a statement. Kami Rita first climbed Everest in 1994, and has reached the summit almost every year since, except for in 2014, 2015 and 2020, when climbing wasn’t allowed due to natural disasters or the pandemic.

Last year, Pasand Dawa Sherpa of Solukhumbu made his 27th ascent of Everest, but it’s uncertain if he’ll attempt it this year. U.K. climber Kenton Cool has completed his 18th summit of Everest, the record for a foreign climber. He was joined by Dorji Gyaljen Sherpa, who’s summited 22 times.

Since the first ascent seven decades ago, Everest has been climbed more than 11,000 times. This year saw a record number of permits issued.
