Kilian Jornet is in the Himalayas to attempt a speed record on Mount Everest. Last week, he climbed Cho Oyu for training and for an attempt at the speed record, but weather shut the effort down.
Jornet has been above advanced base camp on Everest this week and will continue to acclimatize before his speed attempt.
Everest has already had a number of climbers reach the summit this year. Romanian climber Horia Colibasanu reached the summit from the north without supplementary oxygen and without the help any Sherpa.
“It was terribly heavy, very cold. I succeeded. I’m fine, I take the pictures on the top and get off. On the other side of the peak are the expeditions that climb the southern route,” Horia said after his 12-hour ascent.
Also in the Himalayas, Peter Hamor became the first Slovak to climb all 14 eight-thousand-metre peaks. He finished with an ascent of Dhaulagiri last week.
Climbers have also reached the top of Makalu and others are waiting for better conditions on Shisha Pangma and Annapurna.
Quebec climber Louis Rousseau planned on attempting a new route with three partners up the north face of Cho Oyu. But the team was denied access to the area..
