Large Rockfall Closes Popular Yosemite Trail

Part of the famous John Muir Trail is closed while officials decide how to clear large debris off it

A popular trail in Yosemite is closed for the foreseeable future due to a large rockfall that took place this spring. The John Muir Trail took an astonishing 46 years to build and was opened in 1938.

A long section of the John Muir Trail known as the Ice Cut between Clark Point and the top of Nevada Fall is closed due to rockfall. The area is prone to erosion after winter, but this is the largest rockfall of the past few decades. An estimated 1,000 linear feet of trail is covered with car-sized blocks.

“Gates are closed across the John Muir Trail at Clark Point and near the top of Nevada Fall,” the park service said. “For your safety, please do not enter the closed section of the trail.”

There are several other trail closures in Yosemite this spring, including a section of the Valley Loop Trail and the Four Mile Trail, which closes access to the popular Glacier Point.
