In 2013, the small community of Central Saanich, BC will be the host for the first World Youth Climbing Championships held in North America. The event will take place at The Boulders Climbing Gym at Stelly’s Secondary School which is currently expanding the facility to include 60 foot high walls and over 13,000 square feet of climbing. The final structure is scheduled to open in June 2011 and will be comparable to other European facilities that host international level competitions and will offer the most extensive indoor climbing and training opportunities in Canada.

Competition Climbing Canada Director Andrew Wilson is excited about the new facility and the chance to host the World Youth Climbing Championships. He believes that climbing offers children an alternative to traditional sports and a unique opportunity to develop. “In my fifteen years of coaching, I have seen many shy children with unrecognized and underdeveloped athletic abilities grow into confident athletes.  This academy will allow every athlete, whether recreational or elite, to discover and pursue athletic performance.”
