Mat Wright Tries the Only 5.15a in Scotland

Free at Last was established two years ago by none other than Will Bosi

Mat Wright recently worked on Free at Last at Dumbarton, a 5.15a in Scotland first climbed in 2022 by Will Bosi. The route has several difficult cruxes through tiny crimps.

Free at Last follows an overhanging blank section of rock to the right of the crack on Requiem E8 6c. “Although there looks like a lot of holds from the floor, almost everything is an undercut or a side pull,” said Bosi. “The climbing is very technical as the feet are tiny. The climbing is also very intense and powerful as you cannot relax. The send go went really well with almost no mistakes and just a lot of try-hard. The day was pretty still so conditions were not great but while I was sat on the ledge above the slab the wind picked up and the conditions aligned.”

Earlier this spring Wright repeated Rhapsody 5.14d in Scotland. He’s become one of the best trad climbers in the world over the past few years. Since sending Free at Last, Bosi has gone on to become one of the best boulderers ever with repeats of three V17 problems.

Wright just launched a YouTube page with his first video being about Free at Last, watch below.
