Matt Fultz Has Climbed His Ninth V16

This is the second ascent of the burly problem established by Nathan Philips

Matt Fultz, 33, has climbed Nathan Philips’ Deep Fake V16 in Brione, Switzerland, for his ninth boulder of the grade. The problem is the sit start to Fake Pamplemousse.

“It took only a couple of sessions to learn all the moves and make some good links, but there are a lot of hard moves,” Fultz said on 8a.nu. “I fell off the last move 6 times over the following 3 sessions. Then the rain came for a week straight and I wasn’t sure if I would be able to climb again before we left for the USA. But it cleared up just enough for me to give it another session, and luckily I was able to make the most of it.”

After his first ascent, Philips said, “This has been a battle since I first tried this project in 2018 on my first trip to Brione. The hardest thing I’ve climbed by a long shot. It took me 8 sessions before I had managed all the moves and around 50 to finally do it (plus probably another 50 on my replica). It was far from the perfect attempt and I had to fight for every move but that made it all the more satisfying to stand on top. It was honestly the best feeling I’ve had from climbing and I don’t think it will fade anytime soon.”

The other V16s by Fultz are Big Z, Vecchio Leone Sit, Moonlight Sonata, Brace for the Cure, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Grand Illusion, Hypnotized Minds and Sleepwalker (V15/16).
