Muriel Sarkany Climbs Era Vella 5.14d for Second of Grade

Belgian climber Muriel Sarkany has climbed Chris Sharma’s famous 50-metre 2010 power-fest Era Vella 5.14d at Margalef. The climber’s site 8a.nu reported that it was the first send of the route in 18 months.

In 2013, the former Lead World Champion crusher climbed Punt-X at the Gorges du Loup in France for her first 5.14d at the age of 39.

She became one of the first women to climb the grade, the first being by Spain’s Josune Bereziartu in 2002 with her redpoint of Bain de Sang in Switzerland.

From the early 1990s to 2010, Sarkany led the World Cup comp scene in first-place finishes.

She won European Lead Championship in 1998, the Lead World Championship title in Chamonix in 2003 and the overall World Cup in 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003.

Her last World Cup was in 2010 at the age of 36, she finished in sixth.

Sarkany wrote on Facebook after her 35th-overall ascent of Era Vella, “Thanks Chris Sharma for bolting this amazing 50 meters long King line.”
