New Fastest Female Speed Record on Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro

Kristina Schou Madsen has set a new speed record for fastest time up the 5,895-metre Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.

She climbed it in six hours, 52 minutes and 54 seconds (6:52:54) from the Mweka Gate at 1,30 metres.

Her time beat the old record by Fernanda Maciel of 7:08:00 and it was her first climb up the big peak.

The International Skyrunning Federation has officially recognized the new speed record based on Madsen’s SPOT and Garmin GPS tracks as well as video of her run.

Madsen raised more than $1,000 for a charity to build infrastructure in Ngorongor.

GearJunkie.com touched base with Madsen in an interview here. In it, she said about why she chose Kilimanjaro, “Well, Josephine Dewett – who also made an attempt to break the record – wrote to me last year if I wanted to climb Kilimanjaro with her, but to do it a bit faster than a usual trek.

“I had a look on the internet to check out how fast you actually could do it, and I saw that the female world record at that time was a bit over eight hours by Anne-Marie Flammersfeld.

“Later that year, Fernanda Maciel smashed that record down to 7:08, and I had to step up!”
