New Film About Alex Lowe by National Geographic

The film is being directed by Alex's son, Max Lowe

Torn is a new film by Max Lowe, the son of legendary climber Alex Lowe. Nearly 17 years after Alex’s death in an avalanche on the Himalayan peak Mount Shishapangma, alongside that of his cameraman and fellow climber David Bridges, Max picked up a camera.

Top alpinist Conrad Anker, Alex’s best friend and climbing partner, survived the avalanche and went on to marry Alex’s widow and helped to raise his three sons, including Max.

The film includes footage of Alex’s ill-fated climb and his son’s journey to return to the spot where his father died. “This film goes beyond my passion as a filmmaker and chronicles my family’s intensely personal journey toward understanding my father as a man, not a myth,” Max said.

Twenty years ago today in a moment no one could have predicted on a remote peak in the Tibetan Himalaya our family changed forever. On this day 20 years ago I lost a father, but then gained a dad. @conrad_anker the step you took into our lives, to take up the burden left in the wake of your friend, my father Alex’s death is something beyond what anyone including myself I doubt could ever fathom. I can’t even begin to express how grateful I am that you’re here today to be a partner to my mom @jenniloweanker and a father to myself and @sam_loweanker And @isaacloweanker in love. It’s without a doubt the greater risk to live and love than to reach for greatness and perish in its pursuit, and its from you and mom that I’ve learned this most. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with National Geographic to tell my father’s story through the unflinchingly honest perspectives of the people closest to him.”

“Like National Geographic, exploration and storytelling are part of Max’s DNA,” says Carolyn Bernstein, National Geographic’s EVP global scripted content and documentary films. “We are confident his family’s inspiring and emotionally complex story will move audiences around the world.”

The film is now in post-production and will be released in theaters later this year,
