New Variation to Classic Alpine Line Beyond Good and Evil

Strong European climbers Jeff Mercier, Xavier Cailhol, Lucien Boucansaud and Bastien Lardat have climbed a new variation to the classic 600-metre Alp’s route Beyond Good and Evil M6. First climbed in 1992 by Mark Twight and Andy Parkin, Beyond Good and Evil has become a must-climb hard alpine route when formed.

Mercier and partner’s new variation up the north face of Les Pélerins is called Les Flammes de l’enfer. The new line climbs the first two pitches of Beyond Good and Evil before heading left up a steep wall of granite with an M6 and M7 pitch. As they did not want to place bolts, Mercier led them to a splitter corner instead of taking on the blank upper wall. Watch the climb below.
