New World Record of 27 Everest Ascents
Since 1994, Kami Rita Sherpa has been a fixture on Everest, guiding countless climbers to the top while amassing over two dozen summits
For those who pay attention to Himalayan climbing, Nepalese guide Kami Rita Sherpa, who’s now 53, needs little introduction. By climbing and guiding via the South Col, Kami Rita has now climbed Everest a record 27 times. UPDATE: One week after this ascent, he climbed it for his 28th time.
“Yes, Kami Rita climbed Sagarmatha for the 27th time,” said the Department of Tourism official Bigyan Koirala. And the company Kami Rita works for, Seven Summit Treks, said, “We’re trying to get details. For now, it’s 100 per cent confirmed that Kami Rita scaled for the 27th time.
Kami Rita first climbed Everest in 1994, and has reached the summit almost every year since, except for in 2014, 2015 and 2020, when climbing wasn’t allowed due to natural disasters or the pandemic. American Garrett Madison, who’s currently going for his 13th ascent, told Reuters that Kami Rita is a “very strong climber” and that it’s “very inspirational to see a local climber continue pushing the limits on Mount Everest.”
Since the first ascent five decades ago, Everest has been climbed more than 11,000 times. This year saw a record number of permits of 478 issued.
