Noah Wheeler Climbing Return of the Sleepwalker V17

Watch Wheeler send the United States' first V17 in a newly released video

On January 1st, Noah Wheeler made the third ascent of Return of the Sleepwalker V17 (9A) in Red Rock, Nevada. It was the 22-year-old American’s first of the grade. Established by Daniel Woods in March 2021, ROTSW was the United States’ first V17. Will Bosi made the second ascent in February 2024. The problem is a sit-start version of Sleepwalker, a V15/16 put up by Jimmy Webb in 2019. Wheeler just released a new film about his ROTSW send, which you can watch below.

Wheeler repeated Sleepwalker in January last year, calling the problem V15/16, his hardest problem to date at the time. In August, he topped Drew Ruana’s Insomniac V16 in Lincoln Lake, Colorado. In November, he made the second ascent of Big Bad Wolf V15 in the Gunks.

Wheeler has four other V15s to his name. He sent Defying Gravity V15 using wild campus beta in in November 2023. In 2022, he sent three of the grade – Paint it Black in Rocky Mountain National Park, Delirium at Mt Evans, and Sound of Violence in Joe’s Valley.
