The legendary Italian climber Walter Bonatti passed away yesterday at the age of 81. Born in Bergamo, Italy on June 22, 1930, Bonnatti was at the forefront of modern alpinism throughout most of his climbing career. His list of significant climbs includes the first ascent of the East Face of Grand Capucin in 1951 as well as his game-changing solo ascent of the Petit Dru. Bonnati was a strong proponent of a purer climbing style and considered the growing dependency on modern climbing technology as lessening the accomplishments of climbers.  In 2010, Bonnatti was awarded the Piolet d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award.
