The Shadow gets a second female free ascent

Brette Harrington has become the second woman to climb the impressive Shadow pitch on The Chief.

In 2012, Senja Palonen became the first woman to climb The Shadow. Palonen wrote on Sendage, “One of the most beautiful and iconic routes in Squamish, so fun.”

Harrington has only been plugging gear for two years. She tried the route twice on the 14th and sent the route first thing the following day placing all gear on lead. She climbed the route with Marc -Andre Leclerc.

The Shadow was first climbed in 1988 by Peter Croft who onsighted the the crux. Depending on who you ask the grade is either 5.12d or 5.13a.
