Sir Chris Bonington to Recieve Piolets d’Or Lifetime Achievement Award

In April 2015, the 23rd Piolet’s d’Or will take place in Chamonix and Courmayeur.

British climber Chris Bonington was born in 1934 in Hampstead. and will be awarded the seventh Lifetime Achievement Award. The previous recipients of the award were Walter Bonatti, Reinhold Messner, Doug Scott, Robert Paragot, Kurt Diemberger and John Roskelley.

The Piolets d’Or said, “His achievements are milestones in the history of mountaineering in the Alps as in the Himalayas.”

1961 First ascent of the Central Pillar of Freney, Mont Blanc with Ian Clough, Don Whillans and Jan DÅ‚ugosz.
1962 First British ascent of Eiger’s North Face.
1963 First ascent of the Central Tower of Paine, Patagonia with Don Whillans.
1966 First ascent of the Old Man of Hoy Tom Patey.
1974 First ascent of Changabang, Garhwal Himalaya with Don Whillans, Doug Scott and Dougal Haston.
1983 First ascent of West Summit of Shivling, Gangotri.
1983 First British ascent, solo, of Antarctica’s Vinson Massif.
1985 Mount Everest as member of Norwegian Everest Expedition.
2014 The Old Man of Hoy to mark his 80th birthday.

Expedition Leader

1970 The South Face of Annapurna reached by Dougal Haston and Don Whillans and Ian Clough died.
1972 The southwest face of Mount Everest, but it was unsuccessful.
1975 The British Mount Everest southwest face expedition. The summit was reached by Doug Scott, Dougal Haston, Peter Boardman, Pertemba Sherpa and Canadian Mick Burke, who died on the expedition.
1978 The west face of K2, they were unsuccessful and Nick Estcourt died.
1982 The northeast ridge of Mount Everest. Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker died and no one reached the summit.
