It’s Spring Rock Climbing Season in Western Canada

Rock climbing season kicked off this past weekend in Western Canada with climbers heading to popular areas from the Bow Valley to Squamish. In the Rockies, Kid Got, Guides Rock, Echo Canyon, Bataan, Cougar Creek and Tunnel Mountain were all busy.

Climbers have begun their seasonal migration to the Okanagan Valley for climbing on boulders and at crags from Kelowna down to Pentiction. In Squamish, the Smoke Bluffs and boulders have been busy on dry days for the past few weeks.

Some things to remember for spring climbing: check for ticks, bears are coming out, once solid rock might be loose from winter’s freeze/thaw cycles so wear a helmet, refresh old skills like communication and anchors, don’t leave valuables in the car and don’t leave trash (fruit peels and wrappers) or dog poop at the crag. Have a fun and safe spring!
