Squamish Access Society on Continued Closures

Climbing areas near Squamish remain closed during the covid-19 pandemic

On May 14, the B.C. government will be entering phase two of the covid-19 pandemic response plan. “As we move forward in this new paradigm, we will need to work together to create a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” said the Squamish Access Society (SAS).

B.C. Parks has specifically chosen to keep high-use areas closed, this includes most of the Sea2Sky region. The Stawamus Chief, Murrin, and Shannon Falls remain closed, as well as most other parks to the north; Brandywine, Nairn Falls, Joffre and Duffey Lakes until further updates.

“We sympathize with those climbers who live close to Squamish but are not Squamish residents As per the provincial guidelines, Squamish is a Gateway Community and consideration should be taken as such. We hope to see you sometime this summer and we truly appreciate your continued restraint.” Please check the BC parks site here to stay up to date on closures (sort by region: South Coast) and stay tuned for SAS guiding principles as the province looks to move outdoors once again.

For the most part, climbers in Squamish stick to about 100 major routes.. But there are a lot more!! Over 2,000 routes exist in the area(nearly 4,000 pitches?) and counting.. . We are waiting to hear the latest update at 3pm today, as of now nothing has changed but one of the biggest challenges we foresee as restrictions eventually relax will be keeping our distance and minimizing the crowds.. . This photo shows what happens when two parties think the same thing on the same day.. . On the left, Labyrinth—a delightful quest on the ridiculous aplite intrusions of the Tantalus wall— and on the right, the OG aidline Wrist Twister(a classic entrance exam to Squamish aid climbing). . Did you know @mattmaddaloni created a digital Big Walls guide in 2006??(updated in 2008) . link in bio for more..
