The Bugaboos Are Snowy to Start Summer
Search and rescue technician Jordy Shepherd gives update from the Bugaboos

With the summer alpine rock season quickly approaching, many climbers are wondering what the conditions are like in the Bugaboos. A short update was recently published on the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides mountain conditions report page.
Search and rescue technician Jordy Shepherd reported about several rescues in the Columbia Valley area over the past few days, including one of a hiker in the Bugaboos. He noted that there’s more snow now than at this time last year.
“With the cooler spring temperatures we’ve experienced this year, there is still up to a metre of snow in the alpine,” Shepherd’s report said. “This can present poor travel conditions in the afternoon or periods of warm weather when the snowpack becomes unsupportive to foot traffic. With many areas holding onto snow the risk of avalanches is still present as well.”
He also noted that climbers should watch out for crevasses starting to open up and to watch out for rockfall. Read Shepherd’s tips on how to stay alive when rock climbing here. Also to note, East Creek has a new outhouse, more info below.
